Death Summary: She developed uterine cancer, which later spread to other parts of her body. Her body was embalmed. In 1955 when a revolution deposed Perón, her body was hidden by the new military authorities. In 1971 it was finally revealed to have been buried in Italy. She was brought back to Argentina and finally buried there.
Who was Maria Eva Duarte: Argentine actress and Colonel Juan Perón wife. When Perón came to power in 1946, elected president of Argentina, she became actively involved in politics. She received the backing of the labour unions, and became the darling of the poor (descamisados). To this day "Evita" as she is known in Argentina is worshipped by the people.
Some historians consider that she was the driving force behind Perón. She's credited with fighting for womens rights, pricipally helping women obtain the right to vote in Argentina.
