Who was Ho Chi Minh: A vietnamese communist, he formed the vietminh, a comminist organization, to fight against the japanese in world war II. In 1945 he anounced the formation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and continued the fight against foreign occupation, this time by the french, the prewar colonial power. Fighting continued until 1954 when the french were defeated in Dien Bien Phu, causing the french to retire. In 1955 he became the president of the D.R. of Vietnam (north Vietnam) and began the fight to unify north and south Vietnam, first against the south vietnamese generals, then against the United States. In 1975 South Vietnam surrendered, vietnam was united and its capital, Saigon, was named after him as �Ho Chi Minh City�.
