Who was Augusto Pinochet: General and dictator of Chile.
General Pinochet was the commander in chief of the chilean army. In 1973 he led a revolution that deposed the then socialist president salvador Allende. He than declared himself president and remained in power until 1990. He remained as head of the army until 1998, when he was declared senator for life.
In the same year he was arrested in europe on human rights charges, and subsequently also charged in chile.
