Who was Jimmy Hoffa: He became president of the Teamsters Union, (truckers) in 1957 and served until 1964, when he was convicted of jury tampering and was sentenced to 8 years in prison. He was released in 1971 thanks to a presidential pardon by Richard Nixon, apparently in exchange for illegal campaign contributions. Upon release he attempted to return as head of the Teamsters Union until his disappearance, in 1975.
Hoffa was investigated repeatedly for corruption and racketeering by John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. There are indications that Hoffa and his mob connections had a hand in the Kennedy assassination.
When he disappeared in 1975 he was due to testify before the "House select committee on assassinations".
