Richard Cooey

Born: 1967-06-09 - Died: 2008-10-14
Cause of Death:
Execution

Death Summary: Richard Cooey was executed at 10:28 AM on October 14, 2008 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.

His execution took place after a lengthy set of appeals, with his last one being declined. He argued that his obesity rendered lethal injection an inhuman form of execution… which is sort of mind boggling.

At the time of his execution, he was asked if he had any final words, Cooey said “You haven't paid attention to anything I've had to say for the past 22 years, so why would you think that I would think you're going to pay attention to what I have to say now?”

Who was Richard Cooey: In the early morning of September 1, 1986 Cooey and a friend was throwing chunks of concrete off the Stoner Street Bridge onto U.S. Interstate 77 in Akron, Ohio. One of the chunks hit an oncoming car, which was driven by University of Akron student Wendy Offredo (age 20), also in the car was another student Dawn McCreery (age 19).

Cooey and his cohorts pretended to rescue the two women, but in reality they were kidnapping the unsuspecting college students.

The men took them to a near by field and beat, stabbed, tortured and raped the women for three and a half hours they beat them to death and abandoned the bodies.

Cooey was convicted on November 14, 1986, and subsequently sentenced to death.
